According
to recent estimates, millions of Americans suffer from
one or more types of sleep disorder, ranging from difficulty
with falling asleep and/or staying asleep to excessive
daytime drowsiness. Most people are not aware that these
disorders can create or aggravate serious medical problems,
affect one's productivity, and generally depress one’s
outlook on and quality of life.
South Carolina Sleep Medicine (SCSM) responds
to the needs of patients with sleep disorders, their families
and their physicians.
SCSM has state-of-the-art medical equipment, along
with a specially trained and qualified staff, available to
assist in the proper diagnosis and treatment of assorted sleep
disorders.
SCSM uses a multidisciplinary approach, along
with the referring physician, to treat and improve the quality
of both sleeping and waking hours.
As part of the sleep disorder evaluation, the individual
undergoes a sleep consultation with one of our Doctors and
a sleep study (Polysomnography) in which a Polysomnographic
technologist monitors the individual through the entire sleep
period. The patient sleeps in a home-like bedroom setting while
the technologist monitors the patient from an adjacent room.
Set-up
involves the placement of various painless electrodes on
the surface of the patient's scalp, face, chest and lower
leg to monitor brain waves, eye movements, respiration
heart rate and muscle activity. There are no injections,
drugs or x-rays associated with this procedure.
Treatments
for sleep disorders can range from airway pressure appliances,
medication, lifestyle changes, weight loss, ENT surgery
and laser therapy, dental appliances, light therapy and
internal body clock adjustments. The treatment or treatments
recommended depend upon the type of sleep disorder diagnosed.
A referral to SCSM includes a complete evaluation for many
signs and symptoms that may include excessive sleepiness,
loud snoring, hypertension, obesity and unusual behaviors
during sleep.
